Questions about Claude Code skills

What are Claude Code skills?

A Claude Code skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file, plus optional scripts and references, that Claude loads when a task matches its description. It gives Claude a repeatable method for one kind of job: a design review, a research figure, a launch video, a plan before any code.

How do I install a Claude Code skill?

Open the skill, copy its install command and run it: skillgild install <slug> --agent claude-code. Community skills are cloned from their public repository into ~/.claude/skills/; hosted installs handle sign-in and agent connection automatically, then install a wrapper for the SkillGild MCP server.

Are Claude skills free?

Community skills are free under their own open-source licenses. Free hosted SkillGild skills include monthly runs; paid skills need a purchase or SkillGild Pro. Your Claude usage is billed by Anthropic either way.

Can I use Claude skills in Codex, Cursor or Gemini CLI?

Yes. A SKILL.md folder follows the open Agent Skills format that Codex, Cursor and Gemini CLI also read; only the folder location differs. Use --agent codex, cursor or gemini-cli with the SkillGild CLI, and hosted skills reach any MCP client through the same local server.

What is the difference between a Claude skill and an MCP server?

A skill tells Claude how to do a job; an MCP server gives Claude a tool or data source to reach. They pair: a testing skill plus a browser server, a review skill plus GitHub. SkillGild's hosted skills use its own MCP server; community skills are plain folders.

Where are Claude Code skills stored?

Personal skills live in ~/.claude/skills/<name>/ and apply to every project. Project skills live in .claude/skills/<name>/ inside the repository. skillgild install writes to the personal folder unless you pass --target.
